Significant Bluetooth Releases To Date
Bluetooth 4.x
This version has both Bluetooth
Classic and Bluetooth Smart (Low Energy) Support. This release brough about the
rems “Low Energy” and “Smart” devices. By including new low-power profiles,
Bluetooth devices can be built to extend battery life significantly.
Additionally, profiles for Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE / BLE) may be custom made
or used from a library found at the Bluetooth SIG.
Version 4.1 of the Bluetooth
specification provided one significant step in the ability to
allow devices to support multiple roles simultaneously, giving
rise to "mesh" networking.
Version 4.2 introduced three major updates to
the specification: Low Energy data packet length extensions
(from 27 to 251 bytes), Low Energy privacy upgrades and Low
Energy secure connections.
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
Adopted in 2007, this version of
Bluetooth added Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) to improve the pairing experience
for Bluetooth devices and also increased relative security strength.
Bluetooth 2.0
Released in 2004, this version
is backwards compatible with 1.x. The main enhancement is the introduction of
Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) of 2.1 Mbit/s.
This has the following effects
(Bluetooth SIG, 2004):
- 3 times faster transmission
speed (up to 10 times in certain cases).
- Lower power consumption
through a reduced duty cycle.
- Simplification of multi-link
scenarios due to more available bandwidth.
- Further improved BER (bit
error rate) performance.
